Overview
The Gravehunter Conclave is an independent mortal order sworn to preserve the cycle of life and death by severing all forms of undeath. Born in the aftermath of the Black Veil Eclipse, the Conclave arose not by divine command, but by mortal conviction—a coalition of survivors, exorcists, and soulkeepers who refused to let the gods be the only answer to the undead plague.
They are not healers. They are not redeemers. The Gravehunters exist to ensure that the dead remains dead, and that no soul lingers, enslaved or monstrous, beyond its rightful rest.
Philosophy and Goals
“Life must end. Death must endure. The soul must pass.”
— The Final Oath of Binding
The Conclave believes that the gods—especially Luzion, Olia, and Kieron—established the soul cycle as a sacred trust between mortals and the divine. Undeath, no matter its origin or intention, is a violation of that trust. Whether born of pain, ambition, or divine design, the undead are an infection in the world’s memory.
The Conclave’s goals are simple, absolute:
- Sever all undeath wherever it arises
- Ensure the soul passes cleanly into the afterlife
- Destroy or contain any forces that disrupt or manipulate the soul’s natural journey
- Reject temptations of immortality, soul-binding, or resurrection without purpose
The Conclave operates in active partnership with the churches of Luzion, Olia, and Kieron, whose divine mandates align with their mission. Many Gravehunters profess personal devotion to these gods, and faith is welcomed—not required—as long as the Final Oath is honored.
Structure and Hierarchy
The Gravehunters are organized into ∫, each bound by sacred oaths, regional custodianship, and shared ritual practices.
- The Anchor – The spiritual and logistical leader of a given Vigil; interprets the Final Oath and grants soul-cleaving authority
- Gravetenders – Experienced field agents and mentors; lead soul-forging rituals and undead purges
- Hunters – Oathbound agents who carry out the Conclave’s will through blade, magic, or judgment
- Ashborn – New recruits forged in grief, survival, or penance; must undergo the Nightwatch Vigil to ascend
- Kindled – Field chaplains and relic-bearers who maintain sacred memory and soul-passage rites
Each Vigil operates autonomously but upholds the same Founding Oaths, carved into bone relics and bound by ritual ink.
Methods and Influence
Gravehunters act with surgical precision and ritual sanctity. They do not raise armies—they form Strike Vigils, small mobile units trained to detect, engage, and cleanse.
Key methods and tools include:
- Soulbrands – Markings burned into the undead to weaken anchors and track corruption
- Relic Seals – Bone-carved tokens empowered by divine prayer or primal resonance
- The Nightwatch Vigil – A harrowing rite of isolation, fasting, and confrontation with death that all Ashborn must endure
- Ashbinding Rites – Ceremonies to destroy phylacteries, soul vessels, and necrotic contagions
- Memory Burning – The obliteration of trauma-laden echoes that risk becoming revenants or echoes
They are known across Khassid as both protectors and executioners—called to courts, ruins, temples, and remote villages alike when the undead rise or the divine falter.
Allies and Rivals
Allies:
- Clergy of Luzion, Olia, and Kieron – Deities who safeguard the soul and oppose resurrection without cause
- Certain primal orders and spirit-walkers – Especially among Syl’Aeris and Felden seers who respect soul cycles
- Some Divinely Sanctioned Inquisitions – Where faith aligns with the Final Oath
Rivals:
- Vargesi – The goddess whose Black Veil Eclipse forced the Conclave into being; their sacred duty is a direct refutation of her legacy
- Cult of the Hollow Crown – Seekers of perfected undeath and soul-severance without divine return; anathema to the Conclave
- Ashen Remnant – Though less hated, they are seen as dangerously naive; “you do not mend a corpse to save a soul”
- The Black Index – Traffickers of necromantic knowledge who covet the soul-binding secrets the Conclave safeguards and destroys
Player Hooks
- Ashborn’s Vigil: A PC must undergo the Nightwatch Vigil before becoming a Gravehunter. Will they survive isolation—and what follows them into the night?
- Soul War Relic: A bone-sealed phylactery from the Black Veil Eclipse is rediscovered, and factions race to claim or destroy it.
- Memory-Haunted: A town burns its dead, but the memories won’t leave. The Conclave suspects an Echoborn—the party must uncover the soul-wound.
- Unforgiven Vigil: A former Gravehunter has broken their Oath. They now lead a village of grateful undead. The party must decide: purify, judge, or join.
