Overview

The Gilded Synod is the formal ecclesiastical and administrative body devoted to Miné, the Intermediate Goddess of Desire, Dominion, Aspiration, and Pride. It governs the sacred institution known as the Gildmark—the divine-commercial compact that structures global trade, enforces sacred contract law, and sanctifies transactional power. To the Synod, economics is not just a mortal structure—it is a divine act of faith, a measurable reflection of one’s ambition, value, and place in the world.

Rooted in doctrine yet utterly modern in operation, the Gilded Synod blends worship with ledgers, faith with audits, and blessings with contracts. Merchants, kings, and nobles alike bow—sometimes literally—before its influence. The faithful see commerce as a ladder of aspiration; the faithless see the Synod as a necessary gatekeeper they must never offend.

Philosophy and Goals

“Desire is divine. To reach is holy. To rise is sacred.”
— Canon of the Vault, Verse 4

The Gilded Synod believes:

  • Greed is misunderstood—it is not hoarding, but the will to improve, to ascend
  • Commerce is covenant—every transaction is a micro-sacrament to Miné
  • Success is sanctified—ambition is not a sin, but the spark of divinity
  • Debt is consequence, not punishment—a sacred reminder of one’s obligations

The Synod teaches that all systems of exchange—coin, favor, position, power—are valid currencies in Miné’s grand market. The truly faithful do not reject wealth or power; they embrace it with reverence and cunning.

Structure and Hierarchy

The Gilded Synod operates through a corporate-theocratic structure with rigid ceremonial roles:

  • High Chancellor of the Vault – Mortal Exarch of Miné and supreme regulator of the Gildmark (currently Ledjaari)
  • Goldbinders – Regional directors overseeing sacred commerce zones; often called “Cardinals of Coin”
  • Contractors General – Clerics who oversee legal matters, dispute resolution, and divine arbitration
  • Scripwrights – Mid-ranking clergy who write, bless, and enforce holy contracts
  • Clerks of the Tithe – Entry-level initiates responsible for calculating offerings, taxes, and oaths
  • Coinbearers – Lay members or faithful merchants granted blessings for specific ventures

All members are expected to tithe a portion of their income directly to the Synod, and more importantly, to enforce Miné’s fiscal doctrines within their communities and trade networks.

Methods and Influence

  • Economic governance of the Gildmark, the largest commercial framework in Khassid
  • Enforcement of divine contract law, including binding oaths, debt judgments, and enforcement via blessed seals or summoned executors
  • Creation of soul-sealed ledgers, where significant life transactions (marriage, succession, inheritance) are codified and divinely registered
  • Miraculous interventions in the form of boons tied to profit, loyalty, or executed ambition
  • Temples as banks, courts, and commercial sanctuaries—often adorned with gold, marble, and divine iconography tied to scales and vaults

Their reach extends into nearly every major city with a trade presence. Pilgrims, investors, and statesmen alike offer prayers at the altar of The Ledger Eternal, the mythic divine record of all mortal transactions.

Allies and Rivals

Allies:

  • Merchants’ Guilds and Trade Houses, which rely on Synod blessings and oversight
  • Select nobles and monarchs, who receive the Synod’s backing in exchange for fealty to the Gildmark’s terms
  • Church of Zaldris, with whom the Synod shares legal frameworks and language-based oaths

Rivals:

  • Threadkeepers, who reject wealth and power as divine metrics, favoring introspection and mystery
  • The Wild’s faithful, who oppose structured economics and view it as antithetical to natural balance
  • Cult of the Hollow Crown, whose pursuit of immortality bypasses economic accountability or societal structures

Player Hooks

  • Debt Divine – A party member unknowingly broke a soul-oath in a trade deal. A Scripwright appears, demanding immediate restitution—or divine arbitration.
  • The Ledger Bleeds – A page from the Ledger Eternal has been stolen. Its contents could collapse a regional market if revealed. The Synod seeks discreet retrieval.
  • The Exarch’s Audit – Ledjaari suspects corruption within the Synod and hires outsiders to investigate a Goldbinder—discreetly and with plausible deniability.
  • Blessing of Ambition – A character pursuing a goal of influence or dominion is offered a divine investment—power now, paid for later. But the clause is cryptic.
  • Coin Without Voice – A rival cult forges fraudulent contracts in Miné’s name. The Synod tasks the party with unmasking and silencing the imitators before faith destabilizes.
