Erynnar
The Island of Herds
Where the grass rolls forever, and the divine walks on four hooves.
Overview
Erynnar is the pastoral soul of the Archipelago — a land of open skies, rolling grasslands, and ancient bonds between beast and kin. Revered for its majestic Velquin herds, this tranquil island supplies the realm with wool, leather, and sustenance, all while honoring traditions that stretch back to the earliest days after the Cataclysm.
To walk Erynnar’s plains is to hear the lowing of cattle like hymns on the breeze, to feel the rhythm of hooves beneath the soil, and to understand that survival is a harmony of labor, land, and lineage.
Though quiet by comparison to other islands, Erynnar is far from dull — its festivals are rich, its spirits strong, and its guardians watchful.

Geography and Climate
Erynnar is a gentle, sprawling island of rolling hills, fertile valleys, and grassy plains that stretch to every horizon. The famed Hearthglen Plains form the island’s heart — a near-sacred stretch of land where the Velquin roam freely among flowering grasses and ancient grazing paths.
Stone walls, low fences, and carved totems divide the land into territories for herds and harvest alike. Frequent mists roll in with the mornings, and the air carries the scent of fresh hay, churned earth, and milk warmed on open fires.
Light rains nourish the soil regularly, while the rare storm is seen more as a blessing than a threat — a gift from Morgdhav to keep the land strong and the pastures green.
Major Settlements and Landmarks
- Dunfold Market – A central town where ranchers, weavers, and traders gather weekly. Its open-air exchange is famous across the Archipelago.
- Weaver’s Hollow – A hamlet dedicated to woolcraft and textile dyeing, home to colorful loomhouses and seasonal dye festivals.
- Shepherd’s Rise – Built atop a hill overlooking the plains, this town hosts the Spring Tread, a Velquin parade and rite of passage.
- Hearthglen Plains – The sacred grazing grounds, overseen by clan elders and ceremonial wardens.
- The Rootstone Arch – A natural stone bridge said to be where the first Velquin bowed before the gods.
Culture and Society
Life on Erynnar is steady, seasonal, and deeply respectful of the land and its creatures. Community is everything — from cooperative herding to shared feasts, neighbors rely on each other through flood, drought, and harvest.
Children are taught from an early age how to care for Velquin, how to read the sky for weather signs, and how to sing the old songs that keep herds calm at dusk.
Festivals mark every season, with the Braiding of the Horns in spring and Milkfire Eve in autumn — both blending ritual, food, and storytelling. The Velquin themselves are not worshiped, but honored as divine-adjacent — noble creatures descended from a gift Morgdhav gave to mortals in the time of ashes.
Common expressions include:
- “Trust the hooves.”
- “The land walks with you.”
- “A braided horn forgets no kindness.”
The Velquin — Silent Shepherds of the Plains
The Velquin is a medium-sized, herbivorous creature that has woven itself into the very fabric of Khassid’s survival. Standing at a shoulder height of around four feet, it boasts a thick, wavy coat of soft fur — a lustrous gray that deepens to near-black during winter months. This coat is not only beautiful, but insulating, water-resistant, and carries a shimmering quality under sunlight that hints at the legendary storms that shaped its kind.
With long, sensitive ears and large, liquid eyes, the Velquin exudes a quiet watchfulness. Its calm, deliberate movements have earned it the moniker “the silent shepherd of the plains.” Adaptable and resilient, it grazes on varied vegetation and thrives across both rich pasture and rocky upland, making it an ideal partner for survival in the storm-bound archipelago.
The Erynnar Velquin — Pride of the Plains
Among all strains of Velquin, the Erynnar Velquin is the most revered. Bred through generations of care, rite, and wisdom, these animals are larger, stronger, and covered in a pelt known as storm-thread — an almost mystical wool prized for its resilience, warmth, and beauty.
Come winter, their coats thicken and shine with an opalescent sheen, attracting traders, artisans, and nobility from across Khassid. Families mark their movements with songs, lantern processions, and sacred observances that blend husbandry with deep reverence.
Cultural Role
On Erynnar, the Velquin is more than livestock — it is legacy, livelihood, and living symbol. Cloaks and blankets made from its wool protect against the fiercest sea winds and are worn not just for warmth, but as emblems of perseverance.
During the Velquin Festival, the first shearing is offered back to the land and the ancestors — a solemn act of gratitude and tradition. In the Hearthglen Plains, their hoofbeats are as much a part of the island’s rhythm as rainfall or sunrise.
Government and Power
While Erynnar pledges fealty to Queen Vaelandrytha, day-to-day life is governed by a council of Clanshepherds, elected from the oldest ranching families and craft unions. The council mediates disputes, manages grazing rights, and maintains the Sacred Herd Registry — a record of all Velquin bloodlines and their keepers.
The Morgdhavian Intelligence Authority has a minimal presence here, mostly limited to protecting the integrity of the island’s trade routes and maintaining occasional oversight on foreign livestock imports.
There are no prisons on Erynnar. Justice is handled through work-debt sentencing, communal arbitration, and exile in extreme cases.
Adventuring in Erynnar
Though peaceful, Erynnar holds its own secrets and dangers beneath the green.
- A sacred Velquin herd vanishes without a trace, their hoofprints burned into the grass.
- A blight spreads across the Hearthglen, corrupting only the fields touched by foreign wool.
- The Rootstone Arch begins to glow at night, and dreams shared by children speak of a beast older than Morgdhav.
- A stranger claims to be able to speak with the Velquin — and that they are afraid.
- An ancient artifact is unearthed during a seasonal flood, inscribed with prayers in a tongue older than the gods.
Adventure here is quiet, creeping — like a shadow across the pastures, or a whisper in the wind among cattle.
